The advice seems to be:

Meet up on the first Friday of every month from 5:30pm to ride for 6pm at St.Philip's Cathedral, aka Pigeon Park.

An organised coincidence of celebrating cyclists.

The family which asked the original question went for a towbar, which they seem very satisfied with. I will try to find out where they got it from. Any information on makes, models, experiences and sources of trailer bikes, child seats and towbars gratefully received!

The one our family used was awkward to take on and off, and very slightly wobbly, whereas one that I tried out at a Company of Cyclists event had a quite different hitch and was more stable (and more expensive). I will try to come back with more details of models.
Ours will soon be up for sale at a negotiable price (it cost £100 new).
I once saw a tow-bar for a child's bike on sale at a very good price in Lidl, but it seemed very heavy (like all such goods in Lidl, it was only available for a week!)

[...] What’s Green In Brum draw our attention to a couple of films being shown by Oxfam in the Custard Factory Cinema on Thursday and to enjoy some fairtrade wine and nibbles. From the ground up is a Birmingham made film telling the inspiring stories of people in our own community who are joining people around the world in the fight against climate change.
